Although there have been advances in the media portrayal of people of color over the years, many of the black, brown, and beige faces are often still in the background, cleaning or working a street corner. I want to see us portrayed as valued members of society - holding positions of power, being well educated, being involved parents, and contributing to society as a whole.
I want the stories of those who sacrifice so much to come to this country highlighted for their bravery, not seen as “illegals” who come here to mooch off of this country. It is amazing how differently refugees from other countries are portrayed, as compared to the “caravan” from Mexico, Central and South America. Our black, brown, and beige brothers and sisters are also refugees. They have fled/are still fleeing the dangers in their countries and arrive to a place where they know they are not welcome. The risks they take need to be appropriately represented and celebrated for their bravery as well.
I want the abundant contributions of people who identify as Latinx to be celebrated in the foreground, openly and publicly for what they are: integral to the fabric of our nation and a rich testimony of our living history.
